How can you tell if your site has been submitted to a SE? I know I can do a manual search on each one, but I'd rather avoid this time-consuming task if possible. And is there a way to determine when the SE accepted it?

The relationship my company had with seo "experts" went sour ;) and we're doing some sleuthing to pick up the pieces.

Thank you! ;)

There is no way to know if your site has been "submitted." You can tell if it has been indexed by either searching manually for your company name or domain.

"Is there an easier way to do this then manually?" you ask. C'mon, man. There is only 4 search engines left - Google, Yahoo, Teoma and WISEnut. How hard can that be? ;) <friendly sarcasm>

I was afraid "manual" was the only way, but just wanted to make sure there wasn't some shortcut.

Thanks searchrank! ;)

The easiest way to do this is via the server logs, pull them down and run them through a prog. This will tell you when the spiders from each search engine came calling. Not 100% to the day accurate, but if thee guys were anything like half way decent, then the spiders should have hit your site ABSOLUTELY no later than 3 weeks after they told you it was submitted.

I think it is safe to say that most decent SEO's can get a link to your site, and get Google to follow it within a week or so. So IMO 3 weeks is fair lead time for a first hit by a spider.

It is worth noting that getting indexed by the search engines is different then having good rankings. Getting indexed is just the first step in getting traffic from search engines. I would recommend posting a site review request if you are new to SEO and if you are looking for a new seo to work on your website, there are many fine SEO'ers on this forum.

Only 3 actually. Wisenut is definitely not a "major" search engine. Especially since it doesn't update more than once or twice a year.

Teoma, Google and Yahoo...that's about it these days.

Amazing, my home page is #1 on Teoma as well - I never thought to check there and don't remember directly submitting to them.

Does Altavista really get its results from Yahoo? My internal pages have been listed in Yahoo for over a month(not my home page though). I don't have a listing on Altavista though.

Its also #1 on Wisenut.

You don't need to submit to Teoma, that's why you're there without submitting. That's what we're trying to explain here!

And yes, AltaVista currently uses Yahoo/Inktomi results. But I don't think anyone actually uses the AltaVista search engine these days.

I am currently finding that the Yahoo index is fresher than the indices at All The Web and Alta Vista. I was checking a brand new site yesterday that is in Yahoo with up to date content and yet they do not appear at ATW or AV. I have heard that both of these will use a different algo and when comparing searches among the three, they seem to list the same sites generally but in different orders.

Poor Wisenut ... it could have been a major player if Looksmart hadn't of bought it.

Still hoping Gigablast will rise up one day and compete with the big boys. :bubbly:

I like Teoma - cos it seems to like my site! But, I am not sure how much it is used over here in Blighty - anyone else know?

I've come across Teoma but rarely heard anyone talk about it as 'big'.

Cheers

IMO Teoma technology with a decent size index and you have a world beater.

JamesW, Teoma IS big, cuz AskJeeves uses it. Ask Jeeves is fairly well-known.
