I notice that my web site NO Google ranking when I access my site via a Google Search. However, if I TYPE in my web site or access from my FAVORITES the Google ranking goes up to 6/10. I also notice my ranking is higher then the #1 placed web site for search "movie posters" when I manually access my site (NOT via a Google search) . ??? Thanks for helping.

Hi Kevin-

I'm not really understanding your question.

Are you seeing a difference between searched done on Google's site vs. searches done via the search function on the toolbar? A difference in rankings or a difference in the toolbar PR?

Toolbar PR is totally flaky right now- not a good indicator of anything.

Thanks for responding.

If I move my cursor over the PageRank bar when my web site is loaded I get TWO different results, depending on HOW I access my site.

If I just type in my web site info [www.autographsmovieposters.com], the PageRank shows a 6/10.

However, if I access my site by doing a Google Search on "movie posters" and then going to my site (which is currently next to last on the third page), I then get NO ranking on the toolbar (it is greyed out and says "currently not ranked in Google").
AND, it is the SAME web site, only one time I access directly and the other time via a Goggle search. Hope that clarifies.

Kevin

I just ran the search you mentioned, clicked your link in the SERP, went to your site, and saw a PR of 6. The problem you're describing appears to be with the toolbar and not with your site.

The toolbar does not seem to be working right these days. Nothing to worry about!

When I look at your site, I get a PR6. Your PR is fine. :aloha:

Hi kevinmc3,

I've noticed a similar glitch in the toolbar from time to time. I figured out if I moused over the toolbar, then opened a new browser window using Ctrl-N, a new window with the same page would open, and do so with a toolbar ranking.

Thanks everybody. Ok, a followup question. All the top five are at 5/10 in their ranking. But, I can't seem to get out of #29. Any thoughts?

The fact that your PR is higher than theirs (if the toolbar is to be believed) has very little to do with the various sites' relative positions within the SERPs. PR is just one aspect of Google's algo.

I'd have to spend a good deal of time studying your site and the others before I could give you an answer beyond that.

[added] Ok, I took a quick look (I couldn't help myself). The site that's number one in the SERP has a slightly lower keyword density than you do, but it's got a lot more backlinks.

One quick recommendation: the text "Conway's Vintage Movie Posters & Autographs" should be in a heading tag.

I think the answer is that if when you click on your URL from the SERP it is listed as [http://www.autograph...ieposters.com/] -- notice the "/" on the end. With the "/" googles toolbar is grayed out. If you simply remove the "/" the page rank jumps to 6.

Very very peculiar. But that is what is happening. Play around with it. Add the "/" and remove it and the PR will go back and forth.

Maybe you should write Google and ask them.

Hi Kevin
Dont' make the mistake of thinking that your PR is somehow an indication of how well you should be ranking. It is only a rough indication of PR, which is one of the minor factors in your ranking.

In some cases when I look up a site's backlinks via the Google toolbar clicking on those links initially shows a 0 PR. Then..like Compar noted above, removing the "/" at the end of URL does the trick. Weird. I've even see situations where after you remove the "/", it comes back but it also generates a PR (where there was none before). Very strange.... Why wouldn't the PR rank show initially up upon clicking the backlinks?

The google dance is happening right now. The listed titles for our pages flipped to the new updated versions overnight. My PRs are changing as the day goes along. During a previous dance I have had the experience of being on the phone with another webmaster a 100 miles away and the same URL simultaneously entered created a grey bar and 4/10. Also depends which server group you access.

I believe things will be messy for a few days.

Kevin,

What things are noticable from those top 5 ranked sites?

1) They all have the phrase "movie poster" at or closer to the beginning of the title.

2) Either the word movie or poster shows up twice in the title.

Work on that and see what the results are.

Also put the phrase "movie posters" in header tags. Emphasyze (bold) it a couple of times more often. (where appropriete)

Work on your link popularity. That never hurts.

Regards,

Peter

There is no more google dance. google is using a rolling update

That's true, but it doesn't appear to roll every day. A lot of people commented on activity on 11 August, so it appears (based on a very small sample, of course) that something like a small version of the dance is happening every couple of weeks.

I think we'll need quite a bit more time before anyone can say that's definitely what's going on though.
