I've been working on my site for quite some time to optimize for Search Engines. I rank well for individual product searches, but not my major keywords. I've read lots of articles, websites and newsletters. I've validated my html, I've got good keyword density. I've added alt tags, etc.

Is there something I've missed. I'm new to this forum, but it looks like a start in the right direction.

Thanks,

Russell

Hard to say, Russell! (And welcome ;) )

Most likely you need lots and lots of links if you're talking about competitive keyword phrases.

Once you've become an active member here, you can put your site up for review. In the meantime, keep reading and asking specific questions and maybe you'll get some ideas for additional things you can try.

Good luck!

Hi Russell,

Welcome aboard. Just re-iterating what Jill said from first-hand experience, I optimized my site fully but back-links were the key. Getting people to link to you really is the other side of SEO, and the side where the competition was smoking me.

Best of luck,

Rob

Thanks.

I've just read so many things about link exchange and they all seem to be conflicting. Some say it's good, some say not. That's why I decide to join this forum, to see what the rest of the world is doing.

Russell, read through our link building forum, that will get you a feel for link exchanges and linking in general.

There's nothing inherently bad about link exchanges, as long as you're keeping your user in mind when you decide what sites to add to yours.

Welcome Russell ! Glad you decided to join in the fun and games.

In addition to Jill's suggestion, don't miss the Submitting to Directories forum too. There's a pinned topic there that will give you a whole slew of directory engines you can get links from.

Following Jill + Randy's suggestions, another follow up!

This article was released from ISEDB.com today all about link building:

http://www.isedb.com...=reviews&id=872

Having read it, it should give you a good background into link building. Reading that + following up with the threads in here should stand you in good stead!

Best of luck,

Rob
