I have recently been charged with responsibility for reviewing our website rankings and discover that on Yahoo we are not ranked at all.

We used to be ranked well. It was two years ago when our company paid an SEO company to optmise the site and the results were great.

I fear that some of the techniques they used then are now frowned upon.

Any pointers or tips appreciated.

We have some other urls pointed at it coudl that be the reason, i notice there is some noscript content in the site too.

Any tips or pointers woudl be greatly appreciated and if anyone fancies having a look at the site then I can let you know the url

Thanks

Hey there!

Do you have any idea of the techniques that they used?

Cheers

the only thing I can think of is this NOSCRIPT content, the rest of it was just keyword usage etc..

I think that Yahoo, MSN and Alltheweb etc.. have reduced the ranking alltogether.

I have a feeling that it may be to do with having a number of sites all aliased to the main site.

It would not be a problem to remove those aliases but surely it is not a problem to point more than one url at a particular site

I read something about duplicate content, might that be it?

Hey there

I wouldn't have thought that the <NOSCRIPT> content was the problem. After all, the idea behind this is to help those who don't use Javascript/have it enabled.

Unfortunately SEO is not something that you can do once and then sit back and relax when the job appears to be done. It is something that must be worked at and you should always be on the look out for ways to improve your web site - be it fresh content, quality links pointing to your web site, etc. As you say, your company's web site was SEO'd two years ago - things have changed a little since then.

When you talk about the aliased sites are you referring to subdomains - for example. http://minisite.mainsite.com ?

How's your keyword usage? Does it actually look deliberately (over) optimised - e.g. it looks a little strange?

Cheers

James

the NO SCRIPT content is purely there as a technique to include keywords/keyphrases to improve listing

the domains that alias to the site are not subdomains they are simply domains that we own and point at the site.

Keywords might look a little over optimised, I think the site is being penalised for spam or duplication from what I have read but I am reluctant to change it completely because the rankings on Google are great

I was looking to find away of identifying why the site is not listing on Yahoo and then to see if that could be remedied.

All help appreciated

Our url is in my profile

thanks a lot for those links, I will look through them and see where I get. One other query, if our site has been penalised then is there anyway of gettign it back listed on Yahoo? indeed is there any way of finding out if it has been penalised?

Thanks for your help

Welcome rochdale! :aloha:

If you have duplicate sites then you very likely tripped an automatic spam filter that Inktomi used to have and I suspect, Yahoo built in to their own search engine. The first step would be to remove the duplicate content and then see if that will fix the problem. If it doesn't, then AFTER you remove the duplicate content, you can write Yahoo and ask about it.

Welcome rochdale! :)

It sounds like you pretty much know where you went wrong, so now fix it and then you should be able to get back into Yahoo's good graces.
