Just as you are unlikely to turn an SEO consultant into a web designer, you can't turn a web designer into an SEO.

Quote taken from Christian Nielsen's guest article this week.

Yikes. :aloha: As a Web designer/copywriter who's working reeeeeeeeally hard to learn SEO so I can incorporate it into the services I offer my clients, I hope this is an overstatement for the sake of drama, and not the literal truth. I'd hate to think I'm simply wasting my time attempting to turn into something I inherently cannot be. :D

I don't think it is impossible- but I do agree it takes different skillsets for each type of work. Some people can do both, but it's rare to find someone who can do both equally well, IMO.

I would prefer to say that its rare to fine web designers (especially .NET programmers) who understand how to incorporate search engine friendliness into their designs.

It's much more common to find SEO professionals with good web design and development skills than to find a programmer with intimate knowledge of SEO.

Although stating that they are mutually exclusive is off the mark I think. The good news is that the fact that so many web programmer-types are not SEO proficient brings us more work!
