This is one of the things that there is no reason not to do.

Worth the trouble? How is there any trouble at all?

or

Does that really require that much more effort?

Oh, I can understand if your site is already built in a non-optimized manner that it might require work. However this is something you should while you're building your site. So in the future keep that in mind.

This is equally true for dynamic sites. It might require an additional database field but you should use meaningful identifiers for all of your articles.

or

or even better

The usability bonuses alone make this worth it -- consider the SEO benefits to be icing on the cake.

I agree with Chrisb, if your going to do it anyway then you may as well make the best of it. I have never believed in any silver bullets in either design or SEO (it's all the same to me) but silver BB's. Now there is the answer. Do all of those little tweaks and never get too greedy too fast. Build a great site, be patient, tweak and smile.
My sites have been built using the method. I only know of a few that are not in the top ten. It is not as complex as people make it out to be.
One of my domains when last checked (almost a year ago) had over 700 links to it from other sites. And I never asked for any other than from 3 or 4 directories.
