Back in January I completely redid a web site that was originally done by someone else about a year ago. I then submitted it to some of the important search engines. At the time it was already indexed in MSN and Google, but the original had no description meta tag, a "Welcome to our site" title and almost no textual content.

After about six weeks and no change in the old information I resubmitted. After another month of the same I resubmitted again. And now, at the end of April these search engines, as well as those using information that these two use, still have the old information.

I did another (new) site about the same time and it has long since been indexed and about ten days ago I submitted another new site and after 3 days it was indexed in Google - though not yet in MSN.

Any ideas on what might be going on? Does it take longer to get a previously indexed site updated?

Thanks

You can submit all you want, but the engines don't pay any attention to it.

I would guess that you simply don't have enough incoming links for your site to be deemed "important" enough to be respidered on a frequent basis.

Do you have any decent links pointing to those sites?

So, other than directories, is it a waste of time to submit to search engines?

At this point, not really. But the other two sites I mentioned don't either and they were crawled rather quickly. That is what is confusing.

Oh, and I forgot to ask - do listings in other, less important, search engines count as (quality) links?

New sites tend to get a break in getting crawled. The SE's understand that a brand new site is not going to have any or many incoming links pointing towards it. Established sites need to have those in order to induce enough interest to get crawled often and deeply.

Yup, that's the gist of it.

Generally speaking, no. If you're talking true Searches.

Things like Yahoo! Directory, which can be searched of course, do count.

Without a doubt!
