It just seems that as a site owner, I have to take their word for it and I don't see the proof that they're reporting accurate numbers.

If they don't eventually reconcile, you obviously have a problem to address with Google.

I've spoken to them on this before and they tell me that their database is constantly being updated, and that competitors are constantly changing their accounts.
Am I being impatient here, or is this really more of a soft science and something we have to accept?

eragon, pretty much the only way to no where you're ranking is to outbid everyone by a LOT for #1. Outside of that, you're going to float.
