How do we really know how many times someone clicks on an adwords link other than what google reports? I've clicked on a couple of ads after looking up the ad stats and I did not see any change in the reported click throughs. I used two different computers on two different subnets to ensure that google did not filter my ip. I'm going to have to check my log files to see if they will tell me anything.
It just seems that as a site owner, I have to take their word for it and I don't see the proof that they're reporting accurate numbers.

Are you referring to Adsense or Adwords? Regardless, there is a lag between when you click on an ad and when it's reported.
If they don't eventually reconcile, you obviously have a problem to address with Google.

Well that brings up a good question. What is it really called? I thought it was adwords. I have a site and I serve google text ads on my site at the bottom of every page. Not sure if this is called adsense or adwords. Either way, if the results are not real time, then I have no easy way of knowing if G is accurate.

If you are advertising, it is called "Adwords."
If you are a publisher serving up Google Adwords, then that is called "Adsense."
If you are a publisher serving up Google Adwords, then that is called "Adsense."

Sort of related: anyone else having problems trusting what Google says is your ads position and what you're really seeing? I understand they're showing averages, but if they tell me if one of my ads is showing up--on average--in position 4, but I see it in the serps in position 8, that's not much of a reliable average IMO.
I've spoken to them on this before and they tell me that their database is constantly being updated, and that competitors are constantly changing their accounts.
Am I being impatient here, or is this really more of a soft science and something we have to accept?

mopacfan, Adsense if very opaque at this point. Not only is it difficult to track the number of clicks you've generated, but you can't tell how much revenue you're generating from individual clicks.
eragon, pretty much the only way to no where you're ranking is to outbid everyone by a LOT for #1. Outside of that, you're going to float.
