After the last Googlebot visit several days ago, my index page completely disappeared. One of my product pages is now listed on page 14 but the index appears to be gone unless I search for a VERY specific phrase. Is it normal for a page to disappear while it's being indexed? Google is driving me nuts!

Welcome Tonymc!
Yes, if your site is new, it will take a while for the pages to all get into the permanent index. They will appear and disappear for a while- the fact that the Googlebot happened to visit your site on the same day is just a conicidence.
Don't worry about it!

Thanks for the replies. Nice to meet you. Jill, I enjoyed your "Report".
Actually, I've been around since last fall...that's why I don't understand this disappearing game. I expect to come back eventually, but I really would like to understand what is happening. For the most part, Google appears to care about nothing but backlinks, but even that is not consistent.
I have a guest book page that is hosted on another server under a different domain name than my main site. That site has NO relevant content whatsoever, but currently has a page two listing (sometimes it even makes page one!), yet my main site is currently AWOL. Any ideas?

I saw something similar with this past update Tony. A site that had been around for years and held #1 for a certain relatively competitive search term totally disappeared out of the Top 100 for several days. As of yesterday it was back to it's customary #1.
The server was never down, so that couldn't be the problem. And nothing major had changed on the site. I chalk it up to one of those strange things that sometimes happen during updates.
As to your Guestbook question, are the phrases it's ranking for also in or very near the link text leading to and/or from it? I've seen an awful lot of that lately on Google, where a site linking out ranks higher than the site it links to for a given phrase.

Actually, my keyword phrase does not appear AT ALL on the page! There's almost no content either. It's a very vanilla guest book page with maybe a dozen entries in it.
