Yes, if your site is new, it will take a while for the pages to all get into the permanent index. They will appear and disappear for a while- the fact that the Googlebot happened to visit your site on the same day is just a conicidence.
Don't worry about it!

Actually, I've been around since last fall...that's why I don't understand this disappearing game. I expect to come back eventually, but I really would like to understand what is happening. For the most part, Google appears to care about nothing but backlinks, but even that is not consistent.
I have a guest book page that is hosted on another server under a different domain name than my main site. That site has NO relevant content whatsoever, but currently has a page two listing (sometimes it even makes page one!), yet my main site is currently AWOL. Any ideas?

The server was never down, so that couldn't be the problem. And nothing major had changed on the site. I chalk it up to one of those strange things that sometimes happen during updates.
As to your Guestbook question, are the phrases it's ranking for also in or very near the link text leading to and/or from it? I've seen an awful lot of that lately on Google, where a site linking out ranks higher than the site it links to for a given phrase.
