You might want to take a look at Jill's SEO Process which I wrote about quite awhile ago. It's still fairly close to what I do today.

Hmm, I wasn't thinking of the SEO aspect of things even though that's what this site is for. I was looking for the mundane aspect of what do the spiders do with the information. Say when a spider crawls, what is it actualy doing? Where does the information go? How long before it is digested and then available for search results? Is the algo performed nightly, weekly, or monthly? What happens to the information in the meantime? Is there a pattern that can be followed say from the point of a spider visit? What happens when there is an update? Not necessarily the results of what happened but what actually happens? How is it done?
They put it in their database and then apply their algorithm to it.
It might not be answerable by anyone other than the programers but it would make quite the research project.

Might want to read Mike Grehan's book about how search engines work. I think it's all there!
