The bottom site in my sig :) which I jointly own/run.

Be warned though the forum has no swear filterr and the taste factor is set to 'extremley low' :) but we believe we have the largest independant, non-commercial UK based web design/development resorce and community. If it does get too rich for your blood, a good tip is just to steer clear of the Gen Discuss forum.

Why does anyone need to go anywhere other than High Rankings? :parrot:

I'm only half kidding. Because you seriously do have to be careful going anywhere else. There's a lot of forums out there where things all sound great, but where you're actually getting not so great advice.

While I can't say that you would need to go to any other forums other than this one because I think it is the best, there are plenty of great resource sites related to the search engine industry. Some of these are as follows:

Search Engine Watch

Search Engine Guide

Search Engine Lowdown

Pandia

These are just a few as there are many, many more great resources available.

Good luck!

Those are great resources, but they can often lead to articles and stuff that may not be so great.

Just be sure to read everything with a huge grain of salt. In an effort to present all sides of the seo story, many of those resources will link to things that we here at this forum might not especially agree with!

Resources + forums == best result.

That is, Read articles, then ask questions in forums. That way, you get to discuss whatever it is that is proposed.

I find that there are a lot of 'cliques' on the web. A lot of forums where people are trying to make a name , or stir the waters of the pond in order to get a magic fix.

I like this forum best, not because they tolerate me, :( but because if I am wrong, I say I am wrong, and people here tend to accept that being wrong is just another step to being right. There is no judgement levelled, no 'I told you so' mentality.

I also visit a couple of other forums, where I moderate, or just post, but I do see this forum as the blood that flows, a sort of living testing ground. Someone will make a post, and many people will chip in with a ' lets see how this works' type of attitude.

Oh & I like it coz I can say arse without getting this '****' nothing worse than trying to work out the actual word typed. :D

I think blogs kick but...they do not have the community aspect of a forum, but if they have comments enabled and a decent readership then incorrect information would be corrected almost immediatly...

I would highly recommend reading from stuff such as

John Battelle's SearchBlog
Peter D's SearchEngineBlog
Andy Beal's SearchEngineLowdown
Andrew Goodman's Traffick

a ton of other good blogs out there. I have a partial list of over 30 of them located here www.seobook.com/archives/000159.shtml

Personally, I ONLY visit this forum. Why you ask:

1. I am not a SEO expert. Currently, I am a DIY'er (Do it yourself'er), until I convert my personal site over to a business site. After that, I hope to hire a SEO. I believe in letting experts be experts.
2. Since the Admin(s) and moderators make there living from the web, that makes me feel comfortable.
3. This forum already contains tons of good solid advice. No gimmicks or tricks. Just good advice that makes sense to me. I've been able to more than triple my unique visitors in 3 months just by following the advice from here.
4. This may sound silly but Scottie and Jill welcomed me on my first post which made me feel at home. Also, OWG has PM me with helpful information.

Here's something I don't think I've ever mentioned to Jill (or anyone else, for that matter).

A long time ago I made a post in another SEO forum. It was my first post in any web forum I'd made and I was concerned about getting flamed or being called an idiot, but I was so interested in what was going on I couldn't shut up (kind of like now...)

The very next post in the thread a few minutes later was our very own Jill welcoming me to the forum!

It was that warm welcome that gave me the confidence to continue learning and posting, and was also responsible for my signup to the High Rankings forum when I found out about it. No one's been able to shut me up since.... ;)

So Jill - it's a little late, but THANK YOU for your welcome in that forum so long ago - it led to a chain of events that really made a difference in my life, for the better, I think.

Such a simple thing - but it means more to "the new guys" than anyone might think...

:)

How funny- same story here!

I lurked at a big forum for a few months and never got up the nerve to post. I found IHY and lurked there a few months and the first time I posted, 5 people welcomed me. I thought it was great. ;)

We forget that posting in forums can be kind of intimidating- I was stressed to the max everytime I posted something for maybe the first dozen posts... obviously, it doesn't stress me anymore... :)

It seems that the admins and mods are kind enough to allow the other good SE forums(competitors) apart from highrankings in this thread.

Keep up the good work m8s!

Proviso based on my apparent misunderstanding: DDN isn't a SEO forum, more a web resource one.

Ian and others, you can definitely give Doug at IHY credit for the welcoming thing. He has always been very big on that over at IHY, and I'm sure that it has played a big part in the success of that forum.

:D
