Hi everyone - This is my first post. I was wondering -- what does eveyrone use to run SEO or search engine ranking reports? I had a copy of Web Position Gold but was wondering if there was anything better/cheaper before I invest again. I hand submit to search engines so I would only need the reporting aspect of the software. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

HI Theresa
This is a bit of a loaded question, since most of the search engines do not want to see automated queries from ranking programs. Google in particular mentions Web Position Gold as something they do not want used.
You can use free Google API programs such as Gapis to run your searches (you will have to register with Google to get your own authorization code) and then transfer the results to a spreadsheet or other program to make the reports.
Not as convienent or powerful as WPG but safer.

These days, it's really not all that important to check rankings. It's fairly easy to check your logs and see where you're getting traffic from, which pretty much tells you if you're ranking well.
That said, if you must check rankings, WPG is very good. But unless you use a program with a Google API key, you are going against their terms of service. If you don't mind doing that, then go for it and use WPG! I do use WPG at the other major engines, but I'm using it less and less, as it's really not necessary.

THanks for the heads up on gapis, Mel. I had not heard of that one, and am interested to check it out. I agree with Jill. Carefully watching the logs is where its at, especially with Google pushing most of the search derived traffic on the web.
However, clients tend to want to see these reports, which can turn into a real hassle, so having a copy of WPG around is always good
I have been testing out "Ranking Manager" and for just checking rankings, its good, fast, and has lots of cool reporting options.

Also, if you want to track your placement historically (as well as back links), our tool does it as well (it's totally, completely free... really).
I've been hearing a lot of SEO companies have been setting up accounts for their clients... gives them nice little charts and stuff to see how they are moving...
