I would like to run the following issue past you all, probably just to put my mind at rest. :zz:

My primary domain [http://www.VR-TOURS.CO.UK] is a 'virgin' domain (never registered before, AFAIK). About a week after my site going live I also managed to grab the expired domain [http://www.VRTOURS.CO.UK]

The site went 'live' during the last week in Feb. My submission to DMOZ was picked-up and added to the directory within a couple days with my suggested description pretty much unchanged. :D

I have also paid for a Yahoo! directory listing which went live on 14 Feb.

In addition to these submissions, the site is listed in a selection of other reputable directory services and there are inbound links from other good quality, 3rd party sites.

All this has resulted in a reasonably respectable PR of 5.

My issue is that the site is not yet achieving respectable placement in Google for any of my chosen phrases. (ipix, virtual tours, virtual reality tours... )

Google has crawled the site & it is indexed, albeit very low down. I sort of assumed that by the beginning of April I should see an improvement in its ranking, but apparently not. :hmm:

So... Am I being impatient in expecting results by now? Or, have I missed something?? I would say, the only thing I plan to do is increase the quantity of copy on the home page, which I think is a little light at the moment.

I'm aware of the 20 post rule and am not asking for a site review here, just some reassurance that I've not done anything daft!

Oh yes, the only other thing is that I had an adwords campaign running for the first 3 weeks once the site went live... But that wouldn't have affected its ranking, would it? omg

Jon, with any new site it just takes time, so yes, you're simply being impatient. It's going to take a lot of links to bring it up in the rankings the way Google is working these days.

If you think you've done everything you can with your on the page optimization, then figure out unique ways to gain additional links.

If you are unsure about your on the page stuff, then learn some more here and through my past newsletters, and tweak what you have to make sure it's optimized as best as it can be.

Using your key phrases in your link text is very important to Google.

e.g my signature below.

Keep building up these types of links - the more the better and you will get there in time.

For an average category, how many links are we now talking to have ? all the top rankings lately seem to be directory type links pages.. i was previously no1 for several phrases on google with literally about 3 incoming links, i stayed there a while before never being seen again the last month or so.. in process of building links but are we now talking many hundreds of links, perhaps thpusands to have best chance of ranking highly?

ah it seems this site has approx 760 backlinks.. guess that answers my question......

oh well, looks like 20 quid a month for another programme huh?
