Does anyone know why Inktomi doesn't follow 301 permanent redirects?

I've had a client site redirecting this way for years now, and yet it still shows up in the Inktomi databases with the old URL. For reference, the site used to be a subdirectory on my site when it was first created back in 1997. But a few years ago, they got their own domain name, and I put the files up there. I now just redirect the old directory to the new domain because it had built up quite a few links over the years.

This site gets most of it's traffic from MSN, for whatever reason, but they all come through the old links and get redirected.

It's no big deal, but just makes me wonder. Anyone else notice this happening?

I also notice that with the free Inktomi database, they tend to add what they think are top level directory pages, as opposed to deep links. So what I find of my site indexed by Inktomi are all my redirected affiliate links. I create redirects through my .htaccess file, and they're usually something like: www.highrankings.com/johnsebook.

Of all the pages of mine, those are the ones that Inktomi shows in the results!

Tim (from Ink, Alta, Over, Yahoo) mentioned during my cleaning the mess session in SJ, that Ink does not do as good a job as it should following 301's.

Not as good as it should... :D

It's been many years for this one, so I'd say they don't follow them AT ALL!

Maybe saying "not as good as they should" really means "not"?

However, I have noticed that there are many pages gaining referrals in my MSN stats which are not listed in the Ink database. This has happened only the past few months, so it makes me wonder if there is something being tested at MSN, or with Inktomi.

Are you sure the traffic isn't from LookSmart or Zeal? A lot of those grandfathered URLs in Zeal would never have been updated. It might just be a case of Zeal rather than Inktomi traffic.

Definitely not Zeal. This site was never submitted to Zeal, or would be accepted for commercial reasons. Ink doesn't show many of the pages, yet I see them in my MSN referrals.
