Will link building on forums help? I'm new to SEO and curious. Of course, I wouldn't link build on this forum. Thanks!

That all depends on what you consider SEO, however as 'Link building' purely for links is more likely to hurt than help, I guess the answer is NO!

Along with the comment section of a blog, a web forum is pretty much the reason nofollow was invented. No reputable forum is going to let you get away with posting in order to build links. Even if they don't nofollow them by default, they'll probably edit or delete your posts.

Any forum that does let you get away with it is probably unmonitored and overflowing with nothing but spam posts that are in turn overflowing with links. As such, links from such forums are of absolutely no help because they're of absolutely no value.
