Soon after launching my WP blog 5 years ago, I disabled Comments. I deleted all comments and emptied the WP trash a week ago. In my Google Webmasters Tools > Search Appearance > HTML Improvements> Duplicate Title Tags, I found dozens of listings that were:

mysiet.com/blog/category.post-title

mysite.com/blog/category/post-title/comments-page-1

I can copy and paste the dozens of these duplicate "comment-page-1" versions of the URLs in my browser and the page comes up even though there is not a comment section available , nor any comments. How do I get rid of this unnecessary pagination since I've disabled WP Comments? I'm not asking you to reply with a tutorial, just pointing me to reading material or telling me which term to research will be enough.

Do they exist in search results?

If you are using a caching plugin, try rebuilding the cache for your Website.

If you have not cleared your browser history in a long time, try doing that.

If you are still in doubt, use the fetch as Googlebot tool in GWT to see if the URLs still exist.

Often these kinds of reports are just old data that GWT is reluctant to remove until you mark the problems as fixed.

Yes, they occasionally come up.

Not using a cashing plugin

I cleared the browser history.

I fetched and rendered as Googlebot tool and the URLs still exist.

For the listings in the search results, does Google show a text snippet or does it say something like, "This result cannot be shown because of the Website's robots.txt file"?

Google may include a URL in its search results even if it cannot crawl that URL (I realize you said the Fetch-as-Googlebot worked, but I'm just running down the list of possibilities here).

You could use the Google Webmaster Tools URL removal tool to get rid of the comment pages.  I suspect this would be tedious.

It sounds to me like Google is simply displaying old URLs that cannot be crawled.

PM me a link to a GOOGLE QUERY with one or more of these listings and I'll be glad to take a quick look.
