Can you get penalized for duplicate content if i put a post in 2 categories or even 3?

It's not a good idea to have multiple category or tag pages that have exactly the same content on them, IMO.

The newer versions of WordPress don't have the problem of creating multiple URLs for posts/pages in multiple categories.

Unlikely!

 

It is far more likely that "your page" simply isn't "important" enough to be shown in the results.
