How much do you guys think SEO Novices and SEO Experts should be paid? using those two figures we can then come up with an accurate median pay. Also, should your pay be contingent upon the current success of your company? In essence, should you help the small SEO firm your working for GROW, in order to receive that salary, or should you receive this salary from inception. I'd like to hear some thoughts on this as I am currently deciding whether or not to start my own Web design and marketing company, or go work for an established firm.

A "novice" should be paid "apprentice rates" with incremental pay rises as and when you prove yourself capable of being more valuable to the company.

THAT, ... ... depends on what you think of as success.

Definitely not. If you want to recruit the best professionals you can find, you'll need to pay them a decent salary - and that means a salary they can rely on, not one that might go up or down as a result of factors entirely beyond their control.

By all means, pay a bonus if the company has a particularly good patch. But that shouldn't affect the base salary.

Success is when the company reaches scale. So whether it's 250k the company wants to net or 2mil, success is defined by reaching scale, and every company has a different goal to scale, but the base pay of an SEO expert should be in accordance with a national or state average.
