So Google engineers have spent the last year completely rewriting the Penguin algorithm. Apparently they heard all the painful outcries and decided to start over from scratch.

Provided test results come in okay, they think they will release the algorithm sometime next week (October 6-10).

Disavows that have been submitted up through about September 15 will be integrated into this next update. Any Disavows submitted after that time will have to wait for the next update (hopefully not another year away).

They believe a lot of people will be happy with this update so it sounds to me like they expect a lot of sites to come back from Penguin.

And now we know that they are doing something specific with the Disavow link data. I would guess it's a site-level filter built into the algorithm (filtering inbound links, not outbound links).

There isn't one.

The whole furore is based on Gary Illyes saying  "There may be an update in the  next few weeks".  And of course the usual suspects hear "may be" as "definitely will be" then make the rest up as they go along.

So the real news is:

Google MIGHT be unleashing an algorithm update in the next few weeks. And of course they MAY announce this .... but on the other hand .... they may not.

So, go paint a door and watch it dry folks, ... it WILL be far more interesting to watch the aerobic dissipation of volatile solvents than hanging on tenterhooks until the possible announcement materialises will be.

This morning on Search Engine Roundtable Barry Schwartz added one more detail to Gary's hints (from SMX East 2014). It appears they are aiming to release Penguin updates or refreshes or iterations on an approximately monthly basis after this next update comes out (whenever that may be).
