Hello,

I tried very hard to understand the trackback and pingback function within WordPress.

I found the official wordpress article here:

codex.wordpress.org/Introduction_to_Blogging#Managing_Comments

however... I do not really understand - and I don't know if I should turn it on or off.

And if it's activated and turned on, how does it effect ranking ?

Thank you so much for any little info !

It will not affect ranking in any significant way unless you allow a lot of spambots to drop bad trackbacks on your sites.

The "xmlrpc.php" script is being widely abused by botnets these days, even to the point where they can take an entire server offline.

It's a wonderful idea to allow bloggers to notify each other of when they mention each other's sites, but its day has come and gone.
