Moving A Very Old Blog To A New Wordpress
Posted 25 June 2014 - 02:11 PM
We have a site that is on very old blog software from 2006. The main page of the site currently is just the blog. It lists out all the posts from top to bottom.
We are ditching that old software and making a new site in wordpress that will be on the same domain and we are changing the layout drastically. If we get rid of the full posts from top to bottom on the home page and make them post snippets from left to right instead, will that drastically affect the one thing we have going for us?
Unfortunately we can't export the old posts out so we are recreating a certain amount by hand and doing 301 redirects to the new blog posts. I'm thinking google wouldn't care one way or another as long as the content is still there but need guidance before we change anything.

Just set the post or page 'slug' to be exactly what the old URL was and there is no need for redirects.

Whatever you do, Google will eventually get it all sorted out.

It will likely be better for you. Having entire posts on the home page is horrible usability and creates mega duplicate content.
