Hi everyone,

My client has asked that I create a mini site to feature information about his company's franchise opportunities. Looking around online, we noticed that some companies use separate domains to feature this kind of information. For example, domain.com and domainfranchise.com.

We'll be using Wordpress for the new site, and his existing site is built outside of Wordpress, so if we use the existing domain (e.g. domain.com/franchise), it will link to a separate installation outside of the main site structure. Alternatively, we can register a new domain (domainfranchise.com) and have a separate, unique site.

Question: is there any SEO benefit to using the same domain? Any other considerations that any of you would be concerned about?

Thank you.

did you miss seeing the majority that don't?

That depends on what you consider 'SEO' to be

Of course. Why would you want to punt users that might be interested from a site they already know about to one they do not?

Whichever way works best for you from a business perspective, should be fine. It's all the same to search engines. The domains or names of directories don't matter as much as how you link to and from the information contained within the various pages.

I think you should keep it all on one domain unless the franchise section will have enough content and activity to be its own line of business. Since he is just starting out, I would keep it together with the option of moving the franchise content to its own domain later if that line of business takes off.

Don't worry about which way works best for SEO. SEO has to support the business decision; SEO is never the business decision.

Thanks for the advice everyone. we're going to keep it with the original site and only move it if later if there's a good business reason.
