First off I'd like to say thanks for the responses I'm getting from you guys at this forum. I do appreciate the time.

I've seen many instances of links being shortened. What I'd to know is, other than for general appearance, what is the reason for this?

Are there any benefits, SEO or otherwise, to have a shortened?

Other than they won't "break" due to email clients and servers that 'wrap' long lines of text.

Good for saving space, especially on Twitter. Bit.ly is also good coz it tracks the clicks.

Shorteners have become a mainstay of social media expression, though. You can use them to create brand value as well as track actions.

But before you run out and invest all your time in Bit.ly, understand that they are now selling their data to Moz; which means that your competitors can peek over your shoulder and see what kinds of shortened links you share and which ones people are clicking on.
