I would like to change my permalink structure from /%postname%

to /%category%/%postname%

That works OK but I though Wordpress had auto redirect for the old permanent link structure - so

/todays-post would automatically redirect to /news/todays-post.

At the moment that is not working - I have deactivated the cache plugin and closed down the browser, and reopened.

Any ideas please?

Yes, I can see others are having similar issues with 3.8.1

Well, unless those Wordpress support posts offer some kind of workaround, my guess is that until/unless they fix the issue with a later release of the WP core, you'll have to set up your own 301 redirects.

3.8.1 is wonky.  Some SEO plugins will make sure the redirects happen when you change Permalink structures.  You might find one that is compatible with 3.8.1 which will fix this for you.
