UGH! My 301 redirects are not working - only some of them are working.

This format works with no issues:

Redirect 301 /product-category/category-products.html http://www.samewebsi...oduct-category/

But this format does not work:

Redirect 301 /index.php?getpage=store&getsec=catalog&page=category&cid=1&theme=7 http://www.samewebsi...oduct-category/

I have been told that links with a question mark (?) will not work for 301 redirects.

So I removed the redirects that were not working and the left ones that were.

Is there another way I can do these redirects? If not, will the canonical links be as effective if I am able to just do those?

This is my plan for the canonical links. On the example page website.com/shop/gizmos/gizmo-01.php

I will put <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.website.com/shop/gizmo.php"/> that way when the system creates pages like:

They will know which page is the correct version. So it is ok to put the canonical link on the same page that it is referring to?

I'm sorry I am really confused with all of this.

I don't have a big budget and I'm not looking for a contract of any kind but I would be willing to make a 'donation' if someone would like to have a look and see what the best approach would be.

The canonicals as you stated should be fine, IMO.

That is incorrect, https://wiki.apache....riteQueryString
