Hi Jill and guys,

We are building a site like TripAdvisor.com (but for a specific niche), in which the hotel owners will submit their content (description, title etc).

My question is this: the hotel owners will probably copy this content from their own site, which means that most content on our site will be duplicate. Will Google penalize us for that? How can we rank with this content? Do we need to have someone to change that content so that it will be unique?

Thanks!

Because it's a new site, you probably won't be penalized, but it's doubtful you'd gain much traction with it. Not only is it going to be the same as the hotel's site, it will be the same as all the other hotel aggregator's sites which already are well known.

How can we rank with this content?

I would guess that you can't. You should use other forms of marketing to get people to your site. The question is, what will you provide that none of the other sites provide? That's your unique selling proposition and what you need to promote.

Do we need to have someone to change that content so that it will be unique?

You can, but it's doubtful that without some sort of USP it will help in terms of SEO. I would forget about SEO for a year or two until your other marketing builds up a core audience who loves to use your site due to whatever it is that you offer that the others don't.

Filtered not penalised.

You probably can't, and no you don't, you get the clients to produce different content.

Explain to them that it is pointless them having an entry that is going to work against their own site, whereas they could have TWO chances for a click-through if both pages are shown in the results.
