Hello all,

I am new to all this fun and confusing SEO stuff. I have had great success on ebay, and decided its time for a website.

I hire this guy in the USA that I find off craigslist (keep this in mind for the irony), his website is ranked really good with you search certain keywords for people to do SEO for you. Of course I trust him, he seems knowledgeable and lets me pay with a trusty credit card (CC claim if he scams me).

I was very clear I wanted to start moving now, and its been a week and a half and only thing he has to show is one homepage barley optimized, and stresses its not that important to do the whole site...

Its been a week and a half havent seen any more progress, and now hes going on vacation until next wednesday for the holidays. I understand holidays = family, but come on you havent done anything and now your leaving for 10 days??

I mention I want to use an Indian guy I found off one of those outsourcing sites (dont want to link it due to spam issues). The has Indian guy has 400+ positive reviews, says hes aware of the new google updates, etc etc. The American SEO guy blows up saying all Indian work is known for bad quality and he could use bad techniques and all this stuff and that he said outsourcing is not a good idea... Well considering I make money by outsourcing products in china, that was a slap in the face. I know how to outsource and I know how to pick quality companies...

I might be answering my own question with my claims in being good at outsourcing, but I havent heard anyone tell me yet its safe if you do research into the person.

Sorry for the long post and story, but is it safe to use an Indian company? Especially if they have good reviews?

Thanks,

Brandon

A clueless idiot then!

A.K.A. .. a Y.A.F.I.E.

And this is the same guy that thinks that only ONE 'page' of a website needs "optimising"??

I won' try to comment on the American's SEO expertise (Chris has already done that most succinctly). But from a purely business point of view, have you actually tried discussing these issues with him?

When he started work for you, did you agree a timescale? Did you have an agreed set of milestones for you to measure his progress against? You say he's only done a certain amount of work in a week and a half. What were your expectations in that regard? Did you at any time agree that he should have done more?

My point is you should really have dealt with these issues in advance. But, regardless of that, now that things have started to go wrong, you really need to sit down and talk to the guy. Try to establish a reasonable timescale for the future. Get him to commit to it. And above, keep open a channel of communication with him.

Maybe it's too late for that now. Maybe you've reached the point where you have lost all confidence in him. But, if you are thinking of giving the job to someone else, for goodness sake don't make the same mistakes again.

Just because someone is freelancing from India doesn't mean they're bad.

The real problem with outsourcing SEO whether in the US or India is that until you try the person or agency you don't know what will happen. A lot of SEOs complain about the occasional bad client. A lot of clients complain about the occasional bad SEO.

I think there are a multitude of issues that lead to these complaints well beyond "well, he's a simple cheap spammer" and "gee, they just don't get it". There are no truly objective service marketplaces because every system can be gamed, is gamed, and that's just the way it is.

Maybe 400 positive reviews are legitimate. Maybe not.

You never really know with someone until you take a chance on them. That's probably why so many of us rely on referrals whenever possible. At least when someone you know recommends an SEO service provider you can ask them questions before (and after) making that call.

I first outsourced some complex Excel Macros to India with great succes and good value for money as well as fast turnround.

From that good start, whenever I need to outsorce, I ask that 'Excel Specialist' for a reccommend and been very pleased with results and VFM.

But be aware that so much depends on luck.

Ok these are the answers im looking for...

What I learned...

1) Im straight up telling this American guy I don't want his service anymore. Im not pleased. I have asked for formal writing of what he is planning on doing and can't give it to me. Is taking a 10 day vacation. At first he said Im going for thanksgiving weekend (weds - sunday). Nope Monday to the next weds.... The fact 3 different times he has stressed my site doesn't need all pages optimized tells me hes just hustling people.

2) Outsourcing to india is as safe as outsourcing to china. Its not idiot proof, but with some research and the right questions it can pay off.

Anyone have any recommendations for a SEO guy from india?

No, we don't provide those here. I'm going to close this thread now that you've gotten your answer.
