I'm baffled -- and I've read all over the place and there are tons of conflicting answers and solutions.  So I thought I'd sign up here and hope for some brainstorming.  If for nothing else, to determine why and what (if anything) I can do about it... if, in fact, I should.

I have a site that is being indexed via https instead of http.  My results for my key words have dropped horribly...

Thank you very much for any help,

Peter

Your "key words" have dropped what?

We were on the 1st/2nd Page for a few key words... now we're on the 4th or 5th page.

I'm curious if this is because of the https issue.  In other words, when I look at every other site result for my keywords I see www.domain.com ... on mine I see https

Is this a cause for concern relative to my results?

Thanks,
Pete :)

Dropped by itself does not say much.

Aside from being baffled, you need to provide some relevant information about the site (not the URL). Is it an eCommerce site employing https for security, does it employ a CMS, what has changed recently, any upgrades. Really can you track this back to any recent changes?

It is an eCommerce site employing https at any customer data information pages.  The rest of the site (product pages, home page, category pages, etc.) are http.

It does not have CMS.

There haven't been any changes.

Additionally, when you google the domain name, the "top" page is listed as https, yet the subpages are listed as www

Thanks!

While I doubt switching from http to https would cause you to lose organic traffic, it's possible you're weakening pages by linking to them using both protocols (if Google chooses to see the two URLs as different documents, and I'm not certain they would).

Check your internal linking from secure pages back to pages you don't need to be secure. It may be you're using relative URLs, so a link from an https page points to an https page even though you'd rather have the page indexed as http.

Also, so far you've only mentioned an apparent drop in rankings. Has your Google organic traffic also dropped?

You should probably try to source out why pages which should not be https are being indexed as https. Many eCommerce programs include some sort of administration panel in which you can specify http or https for various page types, not just eCo. I would start there.   Maybe running the site through an XML sitemap generator program and looking at the results will give you a clue.
