Hey folks,

I'm concerned that our website might be getting penalized for our strap line.  Is there anyone, or anywhere, I can check this to see if ours is OK?

I would post the url but I don't think we can put links on the forum here.

Thanks!

ron

Is your concern based somehow on its content, or just the fact (I assume) that it's on every page?

Here is the line up at top above the header: <URL> - Awesome selection of titanium rings, tungsten rings and men's wedding bands.

In the footer: Really amazing jewelry. And really cool people.

I just edited the bottom, it did say "Really amazing jewelry.  And really cool people.  We sell titanium rings, tungsten rings, and amazing jewelry."

My concern was it had my keywords in it.  And after Penguin, sheesh - everything concerns me.

I don't have enough expertise to answer your question (other forum members will give you a more helpful answer than I can).

I would only say that if Google penalises you for showing a strapline on every page, it's likely that the vast majority of e-commerce sites will be penalised for the same reason.

I agree. Think of it the same way you think of other on-page elements that are repeated across the site, like your navigation. You're not going to get in trouble for that.

The flip side, however, is that you shouldn't expect that text to help any of your pages signal relevance for the words and phrases in the strap line -- at least not more relevance than any other page on the site. If there are particular pages you want to get organic traffic for those phrases, you'll need to make them stand out from the rest of the site in addition to standing out from the rest of the internet.
