Hi,

I have an old html site that uses default.asp.

I thought that you could have either index or default as a root page for your site.

In Wordpress I am working on a new site. I notice that it's idea of the top level page is just the domain name  localhost:44823/

Although I created and can get to "default", what page is Wordpress serving up when it goes to the above?

And how do the search engines know which to use?

They know which to use because someone linked to it. That's the only way for them to find any page. But I prefer for default documents to show up at the URL of their directory: site.com/folder/ rather than site.com/folder/some-default-file-name.something.

How do default documents to show up at the URL ?

Don't they need to be served up as a page with a name?

The server has a list of filenames that are checked for in sequence.

No. See above

They don't ... The server does.

Wordpress isn't serving a 'page', the server is simply delivering the content that the WordPress scripts are reading from database.

However the entire content served from a Wordpress powered website starts with index.php.

As does Joomla!, Drupal, vBulletin, Invision Power Board, Magento, osCommerce, ZenCart ... and EVERY content management system that runs on PHP.
