I guess its the page that actually ranks but -

Suppose you wanted one of those sites with a huge stunning graphic on the main page and almost no text other than a few links.

Is that possible, and any ideas how its done? That is, how would the home page, with hardly any text be able to rank high enough to place well, and place higher than the other pages on the same site that DO have a lot of text.

I know this is probably a newb question. Sorry if so.

They can if they get enough people talking about them. But they're making things a whole lot harder on themselves!

Thanks Jill. I was reading more after posting and this seems to be the answer in a nutshell.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what does it matter how well the home page ranks? If rankings are important to you, then shouldn't you be trying to rank the pages that actually sell your products, or generate the leads, or whatever it is that you are trying to achieve?

Just a thought.

Though to be strictly correct it is the URL that 'ranks' not the document, which is how duplicates happen.

There is an "Internet marketer" guy who has been selling this whoop de doo program showing people how he is such an SEO wizard that he can get his sites ranked on the first page of Google results for his keywords in less than 24 hours. He puts a video on the page and a text link that takes you to an authority site like Wikipedia. He's trying to say that all the SEO stuff out their is crap and he really knows how to rank sites. I'm sure he's making good money selling this crap....

There's an example of one of those people I mentioned in another thread who types in their phrase and their site pops up in the top position of the SERPs.

As P.T. Barnum is reputed to have said: "There's a sucker born every minute"
and the old adage of "A fool and his money are soonest parted" also applies.

People are always looking for a 'shortcut' and there will always be somebody willing to sell them it!

"Reputed" is the apt word, Chris. Although many sources attribute the saying to Barnum, it was in fact David Hannum who said it.
