we have created an independent child website for a new project focused on a specific subject for a customer.
The customer's main website is quite old and has already a PR of 4 and has tons of articles (more than 300).
We have created many (22) new original articles related to the topic of the new site, and we have put those articles on both websites, but with the canonical url pointing to the articles in the new website.
We are seeing that although the target project and concept is very new (has to do with some legislation changes), we do not make it into SERPs at all.
Our competitors have just put a single page note on their website and they make it to the first page, first result of google.
My customer is now wondering if all the effort in creating the new separate website for this project was a waste and wants now to retarget all canonical links back to the old site and even remove the new one.
What is the right thing to do? Was it really a waste to create this new website?
We have never followed any black hat seo techniques (no link purchases or similar), but when we look at what the competition is doing, they do such things.
Are we loosing the market just because we are not buying links?
