I worked on this website for a friend of mine and I'm having a major SEO problem.

My blog posts are not showing in Google results. The homepage/blog index page is, but the individual posts are not.

[Google] recognizes the content is from my site, but shows the homepage, not the article page.

It's just that the article is being considered "not relevant".

Any ideas?

Are you putting the entire blog post on the home page? If so, I would only do a few sentences or a summary.

Your home page likely has more link popularity and that's why it would show rather than the posts.

Thanks for getting back to me! It's only an excerpt on the homepage, so I don't think that's the problem.

This problem did seem to appear when we changed the theme on the blog. The homepage has always had a lot of link popularity.

How long has the blog been up, and how many posts (or excerpts of posts) appear on the home page?

18 excerpts of posts on the homepage. Blog has been up since 2008.

Is it possible the new theme has a rogue rel="canonical" setting that's pointing all the individual posts back to the home page? (It's a long shot, but stranger things have happened...)

Thank you, Torka! Doing some research on canonical settings right now and trying to figure out if that's the problem. On my posts, I have a
<link rel="canonical" href="http://site.tld/2013/09/06/dog-shows-off-yoga-master-moves-video/" />

Would that point back to the homepage?

Yep, as Jill says, that's not the problem, then. I knew it was a long shot, but it was worth making sure.

You may just need to start promoting the individual posts to try to attract more links to them.

Yes, was worth a shot for sure!

How would I promote the post? Part of the problem is that a post from Facebook or Twitter actually appears in the results before the blog.

That is odd. I rarely see tweets or Facebook posts in the search results. But even if that is so, that's a GOOD thing as those will lead people to the website.
