Example. Selling a "ABC Company model 123 Red Widget"
Title: ABC Company model 123 Red Widget
H1: ABC Company model 123 Red Widget
Description: ABC Company model 123 Red Widget. The best Red Widget on the market today
alt: Photo of ABC Company model 123 Red Widget
What is your opinion? Helpful, Harmful or Neutral? Thanks

I think slight variations can be more helpful than exact repetition, but I'm not convinced that repetition the way your examples show is actually harmful.
By the way, the alt attribute of a photo really doesn't need "photo of," although deleting that creates even more repetition, I suppose.

Was it the 'right' thing to do or the lazy thing to do? If everyone else is doing the lazy thing then there seems to be more opportunity for those who extend themselves just a bit and put the pedal to the metal. It may not help much, but why waste the opportunity?

At on time, it seemed that the right thing to do was to use the same text, or keywords in the Title Tag, H1 page title, Description tag, Alt tag ext.
It was NEVER "the right thing" to do, it was just one more thing the "experts" claimed to be "what search engines want", and as per usual they were proven to be wrong.
