I am getting about 1,000 unique visitors a day, and my ranking is fairly good in the top 60 sites for my main keywords etc.
Other than PPC and creeping further up the rankings, how best can I get more traffic? I am in the usual directories etc.
Ideally I would like to double by visitor number in the next 12 months without spending mega bucks on PPC etc.
My conversion ratio is pretty static hence the question.

Not anything you'd be directly competing with of course, but think about it from your customer's perspective. If you supply A, B and C to them, would they also be interested in X, Y and Z? Why not contact some of the better sites who provide those services/products and share traffic between the two sites?
If you can find some good partners you will find that this type of referral traffic converts at a very healthy rate for you. You'll have built in credibility because they're being referred to you by someone they already trust.

If not it sounds like a good idea for a new site.

Also give some free sub domains, or free home page and then give upgradation options..

What we have found to be very helpful for us is newsletters. There are a couple of people within our related industry (music, unsigned artists) that have been sending out newsletters for years and have opt-in lists of 100,000 or more.
In some cases they have included us in their newsletter as a resource, sometimes we pay for an ad or barter an exchange with them. The traffic they bring is not consistent but provides definite spikes and is a good addition to our overall efforts.
Hopefully that is something you haven't tried yet.
