We are in the process of adding SEO to each page of our new website and are using the Wordpress Yoast SEO plugin.
The theme we are using allows us to add multiple posts to each individual page of our website. Each post has content and images that appear on the page it is assigned to. We want to leverage this setup SEO-wise and would like some suggestions on the best practices for adding SEO to each post within a page.
For example, one of our page focus keywords might be "car sales". Is it recommended to use the same focus keyword for each post within that page? Or should we use different keywords for each post (i.e. "truck sales, buy cars online, etc") to maximise our SEO opportunity?
We don't want Google to penalise us or confuse the search engine robots, so if you have any feedback/suggestions in regards to this, it would be much appreciated.

First off, you do not 'Add SEO' to anything so I would suggest that reading the linked articles in the Tips for New SEOs threads should be your first stop on your route to discovering what REAL SEO is.
