I'm trying to do a little detective work for an IT team I'm working with. They are for the most part very paranoid about bots and have managed to raise my level of paranoia as well.

My question is this... if a Chrome user bookmarks a secured URL, will Google be able to find, crawl and index that bookmarked URL?

Another question... does Google Chrome save bookmarks in "the cloud"?

This has probably been asked before, but I searched and couldn't find the answer, and have never bumped into this question before. Thanks!

Nope,

Only if you consider Google's datacentres as "The Cloud"

Well maybe... but not sure what you're referencing by "data center". What I'm referring to is in Google's Chrome Privacy Policy where it states that "...Google will store certain information, such as bookmarks, history and other settings, on Google's servers in association with your Google Account. Information stored with your Account is protected by the Google Privacy Policy."

What I'm wondering is if they crawl the saved bookmarks that have been stored on Google's servers to locate new URLs to crawl? I ask because we can't figure out how they were able to crawl all of the URLs on a password protected web site. They aren't listed in any type of sitemap or show up as links on password protected pages.

Google's crawlers  cannot enter passwords to login to 'protected sites'

Well, okay. But that doesn't mean they can't access data that's on their servers. Not a solid argument, but I suppose it's safe to assume that the litigious are keeping their eye on Google and their "promises".

I'm not sure you're following... According to Google's Policy (above) "Google will store certain information, such as bookmarks, history and other settings, on Google's servers".

It's the users search information ("such as bookmarks, history and other settings") that's password protected, not the site's. My prior point is that that just because this information is password protected on Google's Servers, it doesn't mean that Google can't/won't access it. Make sense?

But Google do not crawl and index their own servers though, other than the ones that host  Blogger/Blogspot sites of course.
