Wondering how others are handling the increasingly personalized nature of search when it comes to SEO. Forgetting that you, your team members and/or client can see wildly different result sets (which is a whole other topic!) with Google trying to interpret user intent more and more, how do you optimize for a business that has both local clients but also had a national capability and client base?

It is getting increasingly difficult to be displayed in results for searches where Google assumes that the user wants local results. For example a law firm that specializes in a particular type of law - say intellectual property or asbestos related claims - they may work often with local clients, but many also are interested in and solicit work on a national basis. Short of doing PPC to ensure placement in all geographies, what are you all doing on this front?

Thanks! Interested to hear what your thoughts are.

You just had to mention law and intellectual property didn't you? It's like a dagger with my name on it.  See the following 2 possibly relevant posts:

And if you have a Google Plus(+) account, please see this deliriously long post in google groups:

The long and short of it is that Google apparently does not guarantee successful blended searches or organic/places data the way we the business owner would expect it to work for our visitors. There is an expectations/reward incompatibility issue.

"Personalised results" have been around for a few  years now, which is why we tell people that Rankings do not matter Check the dates on the posts!
