Hi all,
I recently started a local service business and have been trying to compete for the top SEO spot for my chosen keyword REMOVED.
I have read a lot here and on other forums how to effectively SEO and have done everything I can think of,
I have my local listing completed, Google authorship, over 100 back-links, a blog that is full of high quality content and a site full of content that I am constantly updating and rewriting.
I also have articles constantly submitted to Squidoo and ezine as a part of my back linking efforts.
for reference here is my site: REMOVED (spot 1 page 2)
Now my top competitor also uses Google authorship, also has a site that is full of more content than mine is (working on that), but the thing that gets me is they have literally 4 backlinks. 4!!! (according to ahrefs) they are low quality ones at that. its like they are not even trying but are still easily beating me.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? the only thing i can think of is some of our low quality back links are hurting us but I have no idea which ones if any are...
Please someone help.
Jon

Also get over your obsession with rankings, especially for one particular keyword phrase. And also stop worrying about your competitor and start thinking about how you might get more targeted traffic to your site.

In short, as Chrishirst suggested, read the Tips for New SEOs.

And you should probably stop dealing with Squidoo and the ezine sites.

Does the competitor have more of a reach in terms of authority? Maybe the competitors site has easier to navigate links/ content.

Do what I do and just write great stuff that comes across as being from the heart. Lower the bounce rate by putting your best post or content as a means to ellicit another click - that always helped for me.

Anyways - listen more to the guys above me - I'm def not an expert but am doing pretty well by being a million percent white hat.

Because they only exist to provide fake links (at least the way most people use them).
