We have the only hardware store in our small town.  If you search on clarksville va ace hardware, the listing for Ace hardware's main site comes right up, but ours is buried on page three.  If you search on clarksville va hardware, we come up #6.  We've signed up with google's local listings.  Will it help to get onto all the directories that are coming up instead of us?  Aside from them sending traffic to us, will being in them help our ranking?

How can we get more sites linking to us to improve our ranking?

If you're the site using the exact-match domain name with the store's address in the footer, try doing these two things:

  • Add the full name of the store right above the address in the footer

  • Use a darker, larger font for the address in the footer (BOLD IT)

I'm not sure being listed in the directories would help you.  You just have so little information about your store on the page -- and it's scattered all over the place -- that I doubt a search engine should much know what to do with it.

Oh, okay.  So we've just missed doing the simplest most obvious thing?  Duh.  Thanks!
