A client used to have a very successful article directory, after last year's updates, his adsense profits went very low so he abandoned the site. Is it worth to revive the site or that type of web business schemes are now obsolete?

Personally, I've never used those article directories. From what I've heard, in the wake of Google's updates over the past few years, most other folks aren't using them either. People are looking for unique content (and rightfully so, IMO). I don't think there's going to be a lot of interest -- at least, not among people who know what they're doing -- in just republishing articles that are likely to be found in many other places around the web.

It might be worthwhile if the article directory focuses only strictly one topic/theme versus being all over the place. If there's curation for each submission and no rampant outlinking, you may have a chance.
