Ok, FINALLY in Google, yet cannot be found with any of my keywords. I have the site optimized fairly well for "hyperbaric oxygen" etc., what would be my next step here...backlinks?

My real question is here, how important are backlinks since this client doesn't want to persue that area? Can I still get them up higher in Google just with content and optimization?

Thanks,
Tawnya

If the site has just gotten indexed, you shouldn't expect it to show up for searches on your keywords just yet. That comes a little later.

You think? I've never seen that. If you're in, your in. Sure, your rankings can change at any given time, but you should have some indication of how you'll rank, even if you've just gotten in. At least that's my general experience. You'll need to wait until your backlinks take hold and your rankings should generally go up over time, but I would want to see some results right from the start on some optimized keyword phrases.

Of course, this assumes that your page is in all the databases and "sticking." (i.e., not in the database one day and out the next.)

It used to be that I would see a site get picked up one month, then start showing up for some keyphrases the next month, then level off the third.

Honestly, I haven't launched anything new since Google went to the rolling updates so I don't have any frame of reference for how soon new sites are showing up these days.

That was my experience too, but the last site I published was about half a year ago. What I would see was that the site would show up first if you searched on the domain name, and there would be nothing in the snippet. Then about a month later I'd start seeing it on keyword searches.

Scottie,

What do you mean by "rolling updates"?

There used to be a monthly update, the Google "dance". All changes were updated then and everyone feverishly watched to see if their site would move up or down, then they'd scurry around to make changes and watch for the next dance.

May/June of this year, things changed and Google now seems to be incorporating as much new info as possible on a daily basis. I think there are some larger index updates that people are referring to as "the Dance" but it isn't what it used to be.

If you search on "hyperbaric oxygen" and then do a "Search within results" for your domain name doesn't it show up?

I agree with Jill, my experience is that if google knows your site exists it will index it under your keywords. So if you do a "Search within results" search you should find it.

I have seen this behaviour recently where a page is in the index but not showing for optimised keywords however this situation would only last for a day or two at most and then it would show on keyword searches.

I just put it down to Google being a little erratic since they changed to rolling updates...

Tawnya,
To "search within results", just do a Google search for whatever your keyword/phrase is and at the bottom of the results page, there's a link "search within results". Then type in the company name or url and see if it shows up. If it does, then you know that Google associates the site with those words. If not, you've got more work to do. :cake:
