Of course there is, don't put it in the source code

So where else are you supposed to put it?

"A javascript countdown timer?? Being stolen?? Does it have some ground breaking features that are not in the thousands of other countdown scripts that are at just about every "tutorial" site, code demonstration site, coding forum or blog on the Internet?"

It's called staying 1 step ahead.

So where else are you supposed to put it?

If you want to make it "invisible"  ....

Nowhere.

As a general rule, if I can see it, I can steel it.

Exactly.

That is precisely why I want to at least obfuscate it...

You can't. There are silly little scripts you can add that will disable right-clicking on your page, but there are always going to be ways for anyone who wants to read your source code to do so.

It can be as simple as disabling Javascript and then View Source in your browser then most hiding attempts don't work.

So a Javascript Timer would just appear as your unique and valuable code.
