HI there, I am doing a little work on a website and found the above which I have not come acorss before, can anyone advise what it is used for and if there is any point in using it?

Not useful for SEO. That site's internal architecture or search may use it. You should try to find out who put it there, and why, but removing it won't damage the SEO.

As Alan says, probably used by a company on their own site search engine and some "expert" decided it was "valuable".
Bit like the "revist-after" meta element which became part of every "expert's" magic formula, despite the fact that no Internet search engine had ever used it, and for the one company that created and used it, the meta directive was for the reverse of what the experts thought.
