Hi,

I was wondering if I should remove meta tags description and keyword tags from my site since there are irrelevant for ranking (if they were..). Can't they hurt if not remove? Does somebody really know's what's about those tags these days?

Thanks,

Louisa

Assuming you're creating those tags properly, they're not very big. Moreover, some search engines still use the description tag and Google seems to have some use for it under certain limited circumstances.

I don't think it's worthwhile to remove them at this point.

Description meta tag is still important for all search engines.

Keywords meta tag is almost neglected by all most neglected since it is the one most of the webmaster are abusing.

Be comprehensive and precise with your description tag.

No harm in keeping them... so it is always better to write them.

I think Inktomi still uses the keywords tag, it's admitted. So they're still useful, possibly. And, properly formatted, they don't hurt. So don't bother deleting them. Most SEO'ers put them in out of habit, and it never hurts. It kills time while you're thinking of a really good title...

There's no reason to go in and remove your Description and Keywords tag. If you're building a new site, you don't necessarily need the keyword tag (you do need the description tag), but it never hurts to have it, and can help your pages be found on smaller search engines, or with your own site-specific search engine.

There is a huge thread going about optimizing for misspelled versions of your keywords. While this is a problem as far as using the misspellings in your content. It is possible to put the misspelled variation in the keyword meta tag and then the few engines that do read them may return your page for a misspelt search.

Contents of DESCRIPTION tag are often shown is SERPs. So, it's good to use them.

Absolutely agree.

Even if the description tag is not part of the algorithm, it is still part of your overall site marketing. Sometimes the decision to click on the results is based on the information contained in the snippet of information in the SERP. If you can write good, descriptive content that could show up in the results, then you have increased the attractiveness of your website.
