I've embarked on a mission to update many out of sync local directories for a local brick-n-mortar business.  I'm finding that this can be pretty twisted with local service A feeding B, C the master of D, etc. For example citysearch fed by yp. What a trail! Visting getlisted.org is helpful for a central source to identify whether the business is owned or not.

So, anyway, Google Places, Google Maps, Google * is also rather entertaining.  I managed to get the business claimed, successful PIN verification, and edited the profile. I'm seeing some really odd results.

In editing the profile I updated the description, categories, added 10 new pictures and a video. Feels good. Then I signed out, googled until I got to the places listing and selected it. I had a genuine positive review so I signed up for a Google Plus account and got that submitted.

All this took several days - and I'm growing balder.

Back to google, signed out several days later I check in on the listing. In the google search results it's there still occuping the 6th places position; in this view I move the cursor over the business and an abbreviate profile with one picture displays on the right side of the page with "see photos". I click on see photos and it takes me to a plus.google.com page and not the photos I updated. No where can I find the video.

Going back to the listing I click on Review and it takes me to another google plus page (About).  It displays one category of the 5 I selected, unfortunately the one I selected last, least relevant, is the one displayed.

Summary: On this About page the latest review is good, business direction accurate, category messed, wrong pictures and no video.

Q) Does this stuff get intermittently updated according to some phase of the moon?

Q) Aside from a good description, new pics and video, are there any other influencing factors that will help push the listing up the totem pole?

Q) Do reviews factor in?

It's been quite a while since I last updated a G+ company page, but my understanding has always been (since the days of Google Local) that changes take a very long time to get approved.

And reviews can be even worse. If Google finds them on another site, they'll throw them in, but they seem to be very wary of the possibility a review is fake, so if it comes from a G+ account, that account had better be an active one that they trust really represents an actual person.

Thanks, yes I can see the mixed bag thing where Google and several of the other services, Bing notably, feed off reviews of other services.  I feel link if I created a 3-dimensional matrix with what I've learned thus far I'd still be short a dimension.

However, in this case, the review I submitted was accepted almost instantly, felt transcendental. The mixed bag as I see it now:

  • Description - updated
  • Service hours - updated
  • Category list updated- but displays the least relevant one which I added last in the first position. Argggh!
  • Pictures - shows old pictures (fscarfed from where I don't know) as opposed to the new ones I updated
  • Video - does not yet show the video I uploaded to YouTube and linked as per their instructions
  • Reviews - good

So, I should hope for the rest of the updates to happen "whenever?"

Is it correct that completing the profile as thoroughly as possible including both images and YouTube/Google video should provide benefits down the road in positioning?

I visited the Google Places edit profile page today again and the status still said Pending, "Being Reviewed"

Interestingly, that review that I added 3 weeks or so back disappeared sometime between then and now. I wonder if I made it too flowery which was true and flagged it for that reason or another - I have no idea.  It's now about 3 weeks and the Places profile for both this and another site are not yet fully updated. Some content yes, images and video not displaying yet.

Pending is a disconcerting status.  Looking through the edit fields I made an update and submitted it.

2 hours later I go back to re-review the data and the status has changed!  Now it is "Active".  The wrong pictures are still there, but it does say "Active".  So I went back to the other account and made a similar incidental change and it also now says Active.  Same old picture scenario.

What magic follows?

No magic, I'm afraid. I noticed about a month ago that Google had changed my address to "Ward 2, Somerville, MA". That represents who I vote for in state elections, not where my office is. Of course, I submitted a change right away. Still waiting.

Sooo Hocus Pocus is not magic these days.  Yesterday morning the morning after status changed I visited google and found, "OMG", that the service in question was #1 in google places. As it happened I was simultaneously working a Google Adwords Express intro special and had to call for help.  The Adwords Express assistant said they sort of support Places as well so she took a look at the odd behavior and timeframe.

She confirmed the timeframe to be about 4 weeks. She didn't have an explanation as to why the business description updated almost immediately and the images/video, whenever, but she indicated that she would check with the right tech folk who know this stuff and get back to me in a couple days. Stay tuned.

I heard back from the Adwords Express rep regarding Google Places. Summarized:

  • Please note that photos uploaded from your Google Places dashboard may take some time to appear on your business's corresponding local Google+ page.
  • If you want your photos to appear sooner, your best bet is to upload them on the local Google+ page from the "Photos" tab.
  • They are revamping the video functionality, so at the present videos uploaded from your Google Places for business account will not be shown on your business’s local Google+ page. Please sit tight.
