Fantastic Results . . . But How?
Posted 22 August 2003 - 11:59 AM
I have been helping a client optimize one of his sites, coloradoskilodging.com, a bit. . . I've been including keywords in the copy, removing much of the code to external files, etc. etc. -- everything I've learned to do from Jill and this forum!
Anyhow, for the past 4 or 5 months, the results were "eh." Not so great, really.
Then, 4 days ago, the client re-purchased the domain name "coloradoskiing.com", and we parked it at the same IP w/ the same hosting company (so if you type in coloradoskiing.com, it shows the same thing as coloradoskilodging.com)
AND NOW, ALL OF THE SUDDEN, my client's site (coloradoskilodging.com) is ranked in the top 5--sometimes even #1 or #2--of MANY of his most important keyword searches, including as "colorado ski lodging," . . . . whereas before, for the past 5 or so months, he wasn't even in the top 80 results if you typed those 3 words into any of the search engines. And yep, his site was getting crawled by the engines.
Can someone please explain to me why adding this new URL all of the sudden gave us the incredible results we were looking for???

It looks like coloradoskiing.com is the higher ranking site. They both are showing PR3 but within that 3, the coloradoskiing.com is likely a tad higher. If you could get the links to the other site switched to point to this domain you'll probably see even better results.

As a comparison, try adding up the PageRanks of the pages linking to each site.
but WHY is coloradoskiing ranking higher?
Hard to say but here are some things to consider: Was the coloradoskiing.com site reindexed by Google after the domain was repurchased? Could some of the links to the site be relatively new?
And why the sudden boost in rankings?

So.. . . in the end, do I just assume that the ranking boost was derived from the extra link popularity? Because the domain is parked, does the ranking increase for coloradoskiing affect the ranking of Colorado Ski Lodging? I guess it must, as both sites skyrockted in their ranking placements at the same time. . . a day or two after the domain was parked.
Yes? Am I missing any important points that I should be aware of?

linking to the original site, but this is something that all the rest of
us would like to get to the bottom of!
It is also possible that you got caught in the google dance and
will shortly move back to page 10.

And if it makes it through the next GD . . . . . . then we can say with a little bit of certainty that it's not the google dance. . . therefore it is. . . . . . um. . . .
Well. . . anyone??
