I have a client who has an existing site on a domain that is the same as their company name. They are now launching a product that will be be getting a lot of buzz. I want to recommend they buy the domain for their product name, but am unsure about best practice for connecting it to the site. A 301 redirect? Just pointing to the same place will look like duplicate content, right? What if they want to make the product domain the primary, and redirect the older company domain? Any SEO impact on 301-ing that?

They could 301 redirect the new domain to the section on the main site that is for the specific product.
Or if they just want to use the new product domain as their main one, yes, it would be fine to 301-redirect the old one to the new. You'd want to be sure to do a "change of address" within the Google Webmaster Tools account as well. They have some specific instructions on how to do that there.
