Is the key to stay consistent with/ without using capitalization?

Windows servers view this.html and This.html as the same but Apache servers take offense and sees them as different URL's. That's understood.

But if I just stick with one then I will be good right?

I guess my question is more to do with proper names.....I have to create a directory for a School and that obviously has a proper name - so what do you guys think:

my-website . com/Harvard-Business-School/

or -

my-website . com/harvard-business-school/

I can't seem to make my mind up. Anyways the key is consistency right?

Your right that consistency is the key.

Sticking with lower case can remove potential ambiguities on capitalisation and reduce the chance of errors. Many CMSs follow that policy and automatically strip special characters, replace spaces with dashes and convert to lower case.

so you think that I will be ok if I already have a directory that is abbreviated in much the same way as this /CNN/ - i.e. the name of the organization is capitalized.

It's too extreme to change them all now is it and do a massive redirect 301?

Seems too extreme - ? The solution as we both said is to be 100% consistent, i.e. point and name all URL's the same - caps or no caps. Right?

I used to mix case in my directory/filenames and eventually got tired of dealing with all the 404 errors that other people's mistyped links created.

If you have a high percentage of 404 errors for UPPER CASE or MiXeD CaSe directory/filename URLs then in my opinion it would be worthwhile to switch everything to lower case, implement redirects, and just use lower case going forward.

Don't do this out of paranoia -- only do it if the people who link to your site or who type your URLs into their browsers are hitting 404 pages.

directive for Apache's mod_spelling module in a root .htaccess?
